The Risk of Nursing Home Placement A Study of Clients Receiving Case Management, Home Care, Meals on Wheels or Social Adult Day Services

Purpose of the Study Identify the factors that predict a client’s risk of nursing home placement.

The Study  The study covered clients who received either case management, home care, social adult day care, or meals on wheels between January 1, 2008 and June 30,  1,272 clients with usable data

Descriptive Statistics A majority of the clients were female (68.2%) and white (96.5%). Nearly two-thirds (60%) of the clients lived alone.

Descriptive Stats Continued  The most frequent age range is between 80 and 89 (46.4%), with about the same number of 70 to 79 year old clients (23.7%) as 90 to 99 year old clients (19.8%).

Survival Time The time from start of service until the client leaves our care for a nursing home placement.

Survival Time Average survival time for Broome County clients receiving case management, home care, SADC, or meals on wheels between January 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009 was 13.1 Months. Nursing home placement rate 5.2% or 66 clients during study period.

Risk Factors for NH Placement Age: Every year above age 60 raises chance of placement by 8.2%

Risk Factors for NH Placement IADL: Every additional IADL raises chance of placement by another 30%. Dementia: The presence of dementia raises the risk of placement by 77.8%. And one where we have some doubt: Case Management Hours Per Month: Every additional hour of case management raises the risk of placement by 25.7%.
