Mathematics  Grades K-8 largely improved  8 th grade integrates several concepts rather than primary focus on Algebra

Mathematics  HS includes 122 “regular “ standards; 32 “advanced” or “STEM” standards  HS probability & statistics improved  HS Algebra standards remain at higher levels  Mathematical practices not meaningfully integrated into standards

English/Language Arts  Renamed: English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects  K-2 standards adjusted for grade- level appropriateness

Validity Study  $794, 000 Gates grant awarded to Educational Policy Improvement Center (EPIC)  David Conley, CEO of EPIC also served as co- chair of validation committee  Study will compare data gathered from 2-year and 4-year college courses and instructors nationwide  Target completion date: Dec. 2010

Oregon’s Next Steps: Analyzing the Standards  Conduct standards comparison exercise  Match analysis: determine number of matches between CCSS and Oregon’s standards  ‘Strength of match” analysis: determine if match is excellent, good, or weak  Will be basis of a crosswalk document if Oregon adopts the common core standards

Oregon’s Next Steps: Analyzing the Standards  Coding the Common Standards  Surveys of Enacted Curriculum collaborative  Oregon’s standards coded in SEC database  ODE Math and English Arts specialists attending workshop in Washington, DC June 29-July 1.

Road to Adoption: Timeframes to Consider  Common Assessment MOU requires adoption of Common Core State Standards by December 31, 2010  Validity study to be completed by December 2010  ODE standards comparison exercise to be completed by November 2010  Common assessment scheduled for operational administration in 2014
