Opportunities and Challenges for the IT Workforce of a Regional Healthcare Employer Pioneer Valley STEM Network June 4 th, 2014

Are we too busy?

Baystate Health as an Employer of Information & Technology Professionals  300 full-time IT jobs here in the Pioneer Valley  Entry level positions starting as high as $60,000 per annum

Innovative

Challenges  34.5% of Baystate Health’s IT workforce is over the age of 55.  8.4% of the BH IT Workforce is over the age of 63.  Long recruitment cycles  High cost of vacancy & cost per hire  It cost as much a $1,000 per day for each day an IT position is vacant (Lean Human Capital)  Not enough resources to get it all done!

Example of Costs for a National Search CostAmount Advertising$1,000 Interview Costs$1,500 Recruitment Agency Fee$20,000 Relocation$10,000 Sign-on Bonus$5,000 Visa Legal Fees$5,000 Total = $42,500

Examples of technical skills needed at Baystate Health  Application Engineers (developers, CCL, object oriented programming)  Application Analysts (Techno-functional analysts who design enhancements and updates to applications  Data Analysts – Big data is here!  Integration Engineers  Project Managers  Database Administrators

Short-Term Actions  We must do a better job branding and promoting the Pioneer Valley as regional center of excellence for technology professionals.  We need to infuse our technical workforce with leadership skills so that those that are here are incented to stay here.  We should look for “micro” workforce develop opportunities to link students and O.J.T.

Long-Term Actions  Clearly developed pathways from secondary school through to college and/or internship programs  Developed capacity of the employers to provide “on the job” training  Retain top entry level talent being educated in the Valley  Increase first class Information & Technology opportunities here.
