Who Did It? Scientific Method Unknowns Lab

Purpose: To introduce the scientific method To apply the scientific method

Your Task: Solve the mystery!

Police Report A blind man, Mr. James John, was robbed while walking home on August 9 th, 2011 with his seeing eye dog. Since Mr. James could not give a description of the robber, clues were collected from the seeing eye dog’s fur.

Clues found in the dog’s fur: 2 white powders of unknown origins.

Suspect 1: Diet Dan Profile: Mr. James’s sports nutritionist who never uses sugar, only sugar substitute

Suspect 2: Laundry Lou Profile: Owns a laundry home delivery service, which delivers to Mr. James’s house, and always carries baking soda and washing powder.

Suspect 3: Baker Bob Profile: The local baker at “That’s So Sweet” who is always covered in flour, sugar, baking soda, and baking powder. Baker Bob is baking the cake for Mr. James’s birthday and is Mr. James’s brother.

Time to solve the mystery: Develop a method for solving the crime Record ALL data Keep information organized and neat Be very specific Was it Diet Dan, Laundry Lou, or Baker Bob? Follow ALL directions on your lab hand-out.
