Socratic Seminar Prep Work Please take out the following items: Polybius’ Rome After the Punic Wars Roman Republic Chart Democracy vs. Republic T-Chart Twelve Tables/Bill of Rights Chart Roman Republic and Individual Rights answers

Prep Work Define the following words Value Culture Individual Rights Common Good What is the difference between a Democracy and a Republic. Which form of government provides the most freedom and rights to the people? How did Rome’s Republic work? Use the Polybius reading to answer this question. How did the Athenian Democracy work? What was the importance of the 12 tables? What did it offer Roman citizens and why was it created? Why did Athens not have something like this for their Democracy? Do the benefits of protecting individual rights outway the downsides? Explain.

Opening Question We are trying to understand the differences between the Athenian government and the Roman government. Why and how each government formed differently. What the advantages and disadvantages are to a Democracy and a Republic. Seminar One (Inside Circle) How do the values of a culture influence the role and rights of the individual? Seminar Two (Outside Circle) How can individual rights and a nation’s view of the common good create stability or conflict?

Reflection In thinking about the 14 th amendment debate what is more important: protection of individual rights or the effect the amendment and its consequences are having on the American economy? Explain your answer. Why did both Athens's democracy and Rome’s republic eventually fail and turn into Empires ruled by single individuals?
