Number of the Day What are your solutions? The answer is

Round and Round The wheel with an 8 has 8 teeth (or spokes). The wheel with a 5 has 5 teeth. If you turn the large wheel, the teeth make the small wheel also turn, but in the other direction. The picture shows them in their starting places.

Round and Round Suppose you turn the wheels so the 8 wheel goes around one time. The 5 wheel is not back in its starting place. So, you keep turning the wheels until they both get back to their starting places. How many times will each wheel go around?

Round and Round For each wheel, count the teeth that pass by the starting place. –How many teeth of the 8 wheel go past the starting place when it turns one time? –When it turns 2 times? –How many teeth of the 5 wheel go past the starting place when it turns 1 time? –2 times? 3 times? Hint

Postage Stamps You have a sheet of 20 postage stamps. The stamps are connected in 4 rows, with 5 stamps in each row. What is the fewest number of times that you must tear the sheet to get all the stamps apart?

Stamp Time 1.Draw a picture of the sheet of stamps. Then mark the lines where you would tear the stamps apart. 2.Have you ever placed one row of stamps on top of another row, so you could tear off 2 stamps at a time? Hint Postage Stamps

Sticks & Squares Sticks and Squares Which toothpick can you take away to leave three equal squares?

Carnival Sums The person who paints carnival rides likes to get people to think about her work. This time she painted numbers on the eight circular cars of the ride She also painted a number right on the center wheel!

Carnival Sums How are the cars and the center wheel numbered? She used each of the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Every straight line of three numbers adds up to 15.

Pet Shop One day a truck delivered a box of new animals to the pet store. Hannah needed to count the number of animals. When she peeked in, she saw many snakes and tarantulas all mixed up! She counted 18 heads and 64 legs. How many snakes were in the box and how many tarantulas?
