Plagiarism & Essay Writing Ziyaad Bheda

An Introduction to it Copying or stealing something from someone and taking credit for it.

How to Avoid it Credit the source. Write it yourself. Quote if you use the exact same words. Don’t submit the same paper for two things.

Paraphrasing vs. Quoting Paraphrasing, when you put it in your own words. Quoting, taking the exact same text and putting it in speech marks. Need to credit the source.

How to Paraphrase It is when you take something and put it in your own words. You have to read something, understand it, and then say it in a way that you would, in a way that you would understand better.

Successful vs. Unsuccessful Paraphrasing Can’t just change two words. You must understand it and put it in your own words. Parts you can’t change can put in quotes.

How to Quote You use the exact same text that you found. Put it in speech marks. Credit the source, once again.

Referencing When you credit the source (I promise this is the last time you’re going to read that.) Must be done if you use any outside research. I got it from over there!

Essay Writing Structure it, introduction, main body and conclusion. Conduct research early. Make drafts. Proof read. If you don’t know much about the topic, start with basic research.

Real Story: Accidental Plagiarism A man called Matt Refghi got a zero in one of his papers for one of his classes for accidental plaigirism. He had taken a small portion of another paper with the intent to credit it. He added it into his draft but then forgot to change it and credit it, so got a zero on his final project.
