Careers Person’s job, occupation or vocation Total pattern of work and work-related activities that develops throughout a lifetime Affect people’s lives in many ways

Values, Interests, and abilities Values :- person’s basic goals e.g. money, power, fame, religion, beauty and integrity

Interests Actions reflect their values Identify strong interests before selecting a career field

Abilities Influence how easily a person learns to perform various activities Skill itself – e.g. speaking a foreign language or using a computer

Identifying the job you want (1) Nature of the work, (2) working conditions (3) special abilities required (4) physical demands (5) preparation needed (6) chances for employment (7) probable earnings (8) job security (9) chances for advancement

Resume Describes a person’s background and skills in more detail than a cover letter Cover letter given to an employer before or after during the interview Structured so that the applicant’s qualifications stand out and match the requirements of a job

Resume Typed neatly, well organized, easy to read, and on standard white or buff- colored 8 ½ by 11-inch paper Entry-level resume :- one double-spaced page, or single-spaced if there is a lot of information

Resume Strong background or many years of experience may require two pages Remember to note :- recruiters have many resumes to read, therefore, lengthy ones can be counterproductive

Format 1)Chronological :- list of work experience and educational history 2)Functional :- organizes experience according to skills or functions 3)Combination :- fact-filled resume, combines experience and accomplishments

Interview One to one or one to a few interviewers If shortlisted, proceed to the next stage Generally, at least two stage interview

Interview Prepare for a job interview by learning as much as you can about the employer’s business Ask intelligent questions Shows that you are interested in the company

Interview skills Opportunity for you to learn more about the job opening Give your interviewer to know more about you besides your resume Interviewer looking for qualitative skills e.g. communication skills, interpersonal etc

The Next Step After the interview, send a thank-you letter to the interviewer Do not call for an update unless it is necessary If unsuccessful, most companies send a rejection letter or postcard or may keep resume for six months
