Resource Depletion Land and Water Resources © Karen Devine 2010

Resource Depletion Nearly 9/10 of all Australians live in urban areas. This degree of urbanisation has an impact on the physical environment. Urban areas are heavy users of resources from both inside and outside Australia. © Karen Devine 2010

Resource Depletion Urban dwellers draw heavily on: a) Energy: electricity, oil and gas. b) Land: increasing consumption due to urban sprawl. c) Water: stored in reservoirs and used for cooking, cleaning and drinking. d) Food: sourced outside urban areas and occasionally from great distances. © Karen Devine 2010

Land Resources As a resource, land can be degraded by a variety of practices including: a) land clearing b) overstocking of grazing lands c) unsustainable farming methods d) mining of non-renewable resources e) road construction f) pollution/dumping of waste. © Karen Devine 2010

Water Resources Water resources can also be mismanaged by practices such as: a) tapping artesian basins b) damming rivers c) run-off of chemicals and fertilisers d) dumping of waste e) irrigation practices. © Karen Devine 2010
