Measurement and Quality Course Three Step Learning Cycle 1. Exploration 2. Dialog 3. Application
Measurement and Quality Course Module 2 – Length Measurement Snapshot Exploration: Vernier Instruments Measurement requires various kinds of measurement tools. For many applications, the discrimination of a rule or slide caliper is insufficient. One of the ways we can attain greater discrimination is through the use of a vernier scale. A slide rule calipers provided with a vernier scale is known as a vernier caliper.
Measurement and Quality Course Exploration con’t Materials: Vernier calipers, Dial calipers. Parts: Bolts of various sizes. Pick two parts and measure two dimensions on each. Record the results on in the table below and answer the following questions.
Measurement and Quality Course Exploration: Questions 1.Are there any differences in the instruments from rules or slide calipers? Describe. 2.Do the instruments have the same graduations? How do they differ? 3.What might be the discriminations of the instruments?
Measurement and Quality Course Dialog: Vernier Instruments Highlight discrimination, accuracy, precision, and repeatability. Discussion of vernier principle. Reading an instrument with a vernier scale. Sources of error. Proper measuring techniques for vernier calipers.
Measurement and Quality Course Application: Measuring with Vernier Calipers Materials: Vernier Calipers Parts: PRIME Part, Bolts of Various Sizes Drawings: Part Drawings with Critical Dimensions Defined
Measurement and Quality Course Application con’t Look over the supplies parts and associated drawings. Identify the critical dimensions as marked. Using the instruments provided, measure the critical dimensions and mark your results on the data sheet. When complete, notify the instructor to supply the correct dimensions, and then answer the following questions.
Measurement and Quality Course Application: Questions 1.Were you able to accurately measure all the dimensions with the supplied calipers? If not, what dimension(s) were difficult to measure? 2.Compare how close your measurements were to the actual values. Calculate the error for each. What might be the cause of any differences between your measured and the actual values? 3.Comment on the precision, accuracy, and repeatability of your measurements.
