Proposal for a new Community College Healthcare Campus Library A community college seeks to open a new campus to serve students and faculty in Healthcare programs. The following is a description of the new library to be opened on the new campus.

Proposal Summary A community college is experiencing very high demand for their Healthcare programs. There is currently a surge of students wishing to enter these fields. The shorter training time and earning potential of these jobs entice people to begin training in times of economic downturn. The surge in interest has caused long wait lists for nursing, x-ray technician, and physical therapy programs. The main campus is no longer able to effectively meet demand. In order to accommodate students who are waiting, and to better serve the community, the school has decided to build a new campus to serve 1,000-2,000 students. The library will be built as an expansion that includes new classrooms and lab facilities on adjoining property that has been acquired by the school.

Proposal Summary Cont.  Students in this program are older or returning education students, as well as younger students. Most of the students are seeking careers in healthcare.  The library will include print and electronic reference, including many health and medical databases.  While the library will help people with different kinds of information needs, the primary mission statement of the library will be to help students learn how to research, to help them with their information needs, and to direct them to materials to help them find jobs and choose careers upon graduation.

The library will also focus on some additional goals consistent with trends in library and information science. These include: Reference and Information: *Providing the option to make copies and print *High focus on using the best most affordable technology available * Focus more on electronic resources instead of print, to use available space for career center and job information sections. * Reference materials will be available in print *Provide the option to make copies and print, but do not duplicate hardware if possible * Support for copies, print and desktop support for students is provided by a student intern, volunteer or part-time staff

* Network design, network security, hardware and desktop support for staff, web design that includes Internet and Intranet functions must be considered * Ideally campus IT provides dedicated staff to the library that handles the above areas * Implement many Web 2.0 technologies *Provide training in information literacy Environment: * Heavy use of green materials, practices and technologies * Encourage carpooling, public transportation, biking and walking * Energy efficient lighting
