Intent is to allow for traditional, non- commercial subsistence, ceremonial or stewardship purposes by California Tribes and Tribal Communities. THE NORTH COAST UNIFIED MPA PROPOSAL

Crafted by 33 North Coast residents representing: commercial and recreational fishing, diving, seaweed gathering, conservation advocates and tribal interests is comprised of a careful balancing of immediate community needs and long-term ocean protection. The unique characteristics of the North Coast give added conservation value to the Marine Protected Areas proposed. The Blue Ribbon Task Force also noted the hard compromises made by RSG members, as well as the significance of regional buy-in. As a result, the BRTF also supported the unified proposal, recommending it to the Fish and Game Commission.

THE NORTH COAST UNIFIED MPA PROPOSAL Stakeholders faced intense economic and social pressure, but managed to find a path forward together, a way that not only respects the goals of the MLPA, but also honors the needs of the North Coast community as a whole. This was accomplished through hours of collaboration, debate and discussion both inside and outside the official process. Stakeholders sacrificed time and individual needs in order to find that middle ground that proved elusive in every other part of the state. Further, the stakeholders’ accomplishment compliments the design of the Marine Life Protection Act’s implementation.

Regional differences are anticipated under the MLPA California has taken a regional approach to redesigning MPAs along its 1,100 mile coastline: each region of the state has unique physical, ecological, social, cultural and economic characteristics. The unique characteristics of each region means that the specific details of MPA design and implementation will appropriately vary from region to region. The purpose of convening regional stakeholder groups, science panels and Blue Ribbon Task Forces is to acknowledge the specific characteristics of the different coastal regions of California and factor that into overall MPA network design. Specific regional issues and circumstances have been taken into account in every region.
