  Known for a “spirit of determination and self- sacrifice.”  Became governor, chief judge, jury, oversaw agriculture and trade, and assigned allotments of land  Followed the teachings of nonconformist minister Richard Clyfton.  Pilgrims were originally called “Separatists” because they saw no hope of reforming the Church of England. Bradford’s Background

Run out of England to the Netherlands. Bradford came into his inheritance and petitioned for a grant of land in North America. Self-educated man Meant to land in Virginia; weather pushed them to Plymouth, Massachusetts. Bradford was immediately elected governor and held that office until the last 5 years of his life. The original manuscript was lost. The first book was found in the church records. The 2 nd was eventually found in London in 1856; its return to America was petitioned in 1897.

  Journey started in September.  Many were seasick. The sailor that made fun of them was the first to die. What did Bradford say about this?  How was the buckling of the main beam fixed?  …so they committed themselves to the will of God…”  “…there died but one of the passengers…”  What was the first thing they did after hitting land?  “They had no friends to welcome them.”  Winter…not the best time to get there.  Captain refused to move until it was safe. From Book 1, chapter 9

  November…not great planning  Ship had to be repaired.  Savages were around, but didn’t engage them. They ran away. What finally led the Indians to attack?  When exploring, they discovered one of the Indian villages. What did they steal?  What was the rest of the group doing while the explorers were out?  In December, what did they finally do to put down roots? Book 1, chapter 10

  “…for none had the power to command them…”  Mayflower Compact; everyone signed it  During the winter, over a hundred people died and only 50 were left.  As sickness spread, people were kicked off the ship.  “…you, I now see, show your love like Christians…”  Samoset, Squanto, and Massasoit  Peace with the Indians (p. 83-4)  Rich soil in the area, great for crops From Book 2, chapter 11

  Captain Wollaston came to start a plantation.  Lt. Fitcher was left in charge, but run off by Mr. Morton.  Why did the Pilgrims have such a big issue with Merrymount?  “…this mischief would quickly spread over all, if not prevented…”  The richer everyone became, the less worried they were about the community.  Prime real estate was given to those committed to the church and community. From Book 2, chapter 19
