Elements of Plot Please add a new assignment to your Table of Contents in your notebook.

Plot Diagram

Review the definitions of plot, exposition, rising action, and climax with your reading partner.

Plot (definition) Plot is the sequence of related events that make up a story.

1. Exposition Usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. –Characters, setting, and conflict(s) are introduced.

2. Rising Action Conflict develops. Suspense and interest builds.

3. Climax Turning point of the story. Main character comes face-to-face with the conflict. Main character will have to make a decision and/or change in some way.

4. Falling Action Loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) may be settled. Consequences of decision made in climax.

5. Resolution The story comes to a reasonable ending.

Rising Action Exposition Climax Falling Action Resolution After your Elements of Plot notes, make a new plot diagram for “Thank You M’am”. Add each part of the story to your plot diagram. You may work with your table partner.
