Imagism Notes Imagism: a movement in poetry between 1912 and 1917, in which poets focused on achieving “clarity of expression through the use of precise visual images.” Imagists rejected abstract language, attempting only to present the reader with exact and detailed imagery. Imagery : Descriptive language that relates to one of the five senses (sight, touch, smell, taste, hearing)

“My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke The whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy; But I hung on like death: Such waltzing was not easy. We romped until the pans Slid from the kitchen shelf; My mother's countenance Could not unfrown itself. The hand that held my wrist Was battered on one knuckle; At every step you missed My right ear scraped a buckle. You beat time on my head With a palm caked hard by dirt, Then waltzed me off to bed Still clinging to your shirt. 1. What is this poem about? Briefly explain what is happening. 2. What is the speaker’s attitude toward “his papa’s waltz”? Does he enjoy this time with his father? What words suggest this? 3. What does the imagery describing the father’s hands suggest about the father’s character or life?
