Struggling in a Class? Should you Drop or Audit? See Bulletin, pp for University policies

Drop/Withdraw November 12 is the last day for a student to drop a class (withdraw from a class) with a grade of W. “Drop” and “Withdraw” are synonyms. Students should NOT drop a class without consulting with their Academic Advisors and Instructors. Students receive no credit for a dropped class.

Drop/Withdraw If, after discussion with Instructor, a student and instructor agree that the student has NO chance of passing a class, the student might consider dropping the class. If the student remains at 12 credit hours or above, the student remains “full time.” If the student will drop below 12 credit hours, the student should check housing, financial aid, scholarship, Bursar, Veterans’, international, and other policies to ensure compliance. Students: know your status, know your options.

Audit Students wishing to Audit MUST consult with their Academic Advisors and Instructors. The Instructor MUST sign the Audit form (see Registrar Forms). Attendance is required for an Audit. Instructor MAY add other requirements. (Get these in writing.) Instructors may not allow Audit status; discuss well before Audit deadline.

Audit November 12 is the deadline to apply for an Audit. Firm deadline. Consult with Instructor and Academic Advisor BEFORE deadline. Successful Audit: Grade of AU; credit hours count toward full-time status, but course does not count toward degree. NO effect on GPA. Unsuccessful Audit: Grade of E; negative effect on GPA.

How to Decide: Discuss options with Instructor. Discuss options with Academic Advisor. Weigh present and future options: – can you pass the class with extra work? tutoring? extra effort? – is Drop or Audit the better option? – how can you continue to make progress toward degree?
