Gender & Sex Junior Health

Do Now  Daily Recording Calendar  Identify and explain the difference between gender and sex.

Sex VS. Gender  "Sex" refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women.  "Gender" refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women.  "Male" and "female" are sex categories, while "masculine" and "feminine" are gender categories.

Opposite Sex: Likes & Dislikes  In your group, brainstorm things you really like in the opposite sex and really dislike in the opposite sex.  Focus on behaviors and physical characteristics that can be changed, not traits people cannot change like height, eye color, etc.)  For what you like, think about what makes you enjoy spending time and talking with the opposite sex.  For what you do not like, think about what discourages you from the meeting and spending time with the opposite sex.

Rules When Reporting  -When females report, males cannot argue/make comments about what the females say.  Males can however ask questions if they do not understand something.  When females finish, males will restate major points, they can comment on what females have said using “I statements.” Example: “I do not think that all males are insensitive. I think that is an unfair statement.”  The males cannot say, “You are crazy and that is an unfair statement.”  Same rules apply for when females report

What difference of opinions did you hear in your group?

What did the females learn that surprised them about what males like and dislike?

What did the males learn that surprised them about what females like and dislike?

What different things do you think you would put on these lists if you were about ten years older (mid 20s) and you work with people of the opposite sex?

If you had a magic wand, what is one thin you would change about the opposite sex?
