Allstate Sugar Bowl Created by Ms. Tracy

Allstate Sugar Bowl Louisville Cardinals vs. Florida Gators Wednesday, January 2 nd, :30 PM Media Coverage: ESPN

History The idea of a New Year’s Day football classic was presented in 1927 by Colonel James M. Thomson. Founding committee members were: Warren Miller, Joseph Cousins, Dr. Fred Wolfe, Sr., Dr. M.P. Boebinger, F.D. "Hap" Reilly, Ralph J. Barry, T. Semmes Ranlett and Fred Digby.

History On February 15 th, 1934 a committee was designed to begin the initial planning of a Sugar Bowl. Financing for the Bowl included 300 guarantors to provide $100 each for $30,000. The winning team would receive $15,000 while the opponent would receive $12,500, and the remaining $2,500 would be left in reserves for expenses.

History The first Sugar Bowl included Tulane University (the only unbeaten team in the South) and Temple University (the only unbeaten team in the North) facing off. Tulane won 20 – 14.

The AllState Sugar Bowl “The Allstate Sugar Bowl ranks as one of the most uniquely successful amateur athletic achievements in the history of American sports. Born in the depths of the Great Depression and continuing through a World War and multiple devastating hurricanes, it has not only survived, but thrived. It is now recognized as one of the premier college sports events in the country despite being based in a relatively small city (No. 52 DMA) with limited corporate backing (New Orleans is home to just one Fortune 500 company). But the key to the group has been its 100-plus volunteer members who remain respectful of the past while being focused on the future, both for the organization and for New Orleans and Louisiana.” -Excerpt taken from
