You must compose a melody of 8 bars. It is best to write for a chosen instrument, and you Choose – violin, trumpet, bassoon etc. It is best to write exactly 8 bars. The melody must sound ‘finished’. Include some performance directions.

Suggestions for performance directions: Tempo – Allegro, Andante, Moderato. Dynamics: mf, mp, rit. Crescendo < Phrasing – slurs, dots, staccato. Try to hear the melody in your head!

Stay within this range

Melody writing: Look at the given opening – what key is it in? Hint – look for accidentals for minor keys. Make the last note the key note. Make the second last note one step above or below.

Melody writing: Use the first 2 or 3 notes of the opening in your answering phrase. Introduce a new idea - in keeping with the mood of the given opening Use some of the given opening and change it a little.
