What do you know about the Civil War? List five facts that you know (or think you know) about the American Civil War. Ask yourself the 5 W’s and the H and write the answers.

5 W’s and the H about the Civil War Who was involved? Northern and Southern states, General Robert E. Lee, Ulysses Grant, Sherman, Stonewall Jackson What happened? Both sides went to war to prove they were right and defend their beliefs and their pride. When? 1861-1865 Where? Battles occurred throughout the eastern United States. Why? Many disagreements concerning government, slavery, sectionalism, and many other issues.

What did the United States look like when the Civil War started? Read chapter 7, section1 (pg. 210-214). Define and explain “manifest destiny” in your own words. Define “annex” and “cede” and “secede”. Draw a timeline of how the U.S. fulfilled its “manifest destiny”. a. List the areas that became part of the United States from 1776-1853 (map, page 213) b. What years did each area become part of the U.S.? c. From whom (which country) did each area come? d. How did each area join the country?
