 a condition where excess body fat negatively affects a child's health or wellbeing.  the diagnosis of obesity is often based on BMI (Body Mass Index)  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines obesity as a BMI greater than or equal to the 95th percentile.  Today about 1 in 3 children and youth (ages 2-19) in the United States are already overweight or obese.  Some experts believe that if obesity among kids continues to increase at this rate, our current generation could become the FIRST in American history to live shorter lives than their parents.

 Childhood obesity can lead to life-threatening conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep problems, cancer, and other disorders.  Mortality rates for children who are obese compared to average size kids is 40% higher.  Statistics show that children who are obese will most likely be obese adults.

 Obese children are more likely to be bullied by their peers and even family members.  Stereotypes around obesity can lead to a child having low self-esteem.  Depression and reclusion is seen at an alarming rate in obese children.

 One of the greatest causes of childhood obesity is genetics. Children of two obese parents are more likely to become obese themselves.  Poor diet habits is another key contributor to obesity  The lapse of physical activity also is a factor.
