Terri Sjodin on Persuasive and Effective Communication Examples of great speakers? What makes them “great speakers”? HW: RB, p. 49, 50

EFFECTIVE PRESENTATIONS SPEAKER CONTENT AUDIENCE What is the purpose of the talk? What do my listeners care about? How do I connect with them? How much do they know? What do I want them to remember? WIN THE AUDIENCE ! WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? THE RULE OF THREE

STRUCTURE 1) INTRODUCTION Tell the audience what you are going to say. 2) BODY Say it. (3 main points) 3) ENDING Tell the audience what you have said. →RB, p. 51

1) OPENING/INTRODUCTION Capture people’s interest and relate the subject to them! Give them food for thought Give the audience some amazing facts Tell a story Tell a joke (!?)

1) OPENING/INTRODUCTION signal a start greet the audience introduce yourself/your group introduce your subject (state the purpose) outline your structure explain how to deal with questions USEFUL PHRASES RB p. 53

2) BODY Guide your audience through your presentation! 80% of the presentation time 3-4 main points signal a start of each main point (signpost) USEFUL PHRASES RB p. 54

SIGNPOSTING -TRANSITION OVERALL PROFILE OF THE MARKET CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES CASE STUDIES This is all about the market profile. Let’s now turn to We have seen the chalenges so we’ll now move on to the final point.. → RB, p

3) ENDING Sum up and conclude! repeat your main points signal an end thank the audience invite questions

LANGUAGE OF PRESENTATIONS spoken language: simple and clear language, short sentences problem: preparation (written language)→ delivery (spoken language) language of content (specific) v. signalling phrases (typical)

TERRY SJODIN ON PPT PRESENTATIONS How does she use the word “crutch” in the context of ppt presentations? How does ppt become the presenter’s “enemy”? What is the rule of thumb for using ppt slides? What is the true, authentic visual aid according to her?

HOW TO CREATE AN AWESOME POWERPOINT PRESENTATION Watch the video and create three tips for the use of ppt on the basis of this video. BULLET POINTS TEXT IMAGES

VISUAL AIDS PowerPoint presentations →RB, p. 58, 59 clear and big layout: less is more only key words / ideas/ pictures / charts /graphs 9-10 slides slide one: title+names slide two: content last slide: sources Plan B: printouts, OHP, board

COMMON MISTAKES Lack of motivation and enthusiasm: students don’t care about the topic or the audience! Reading not speaking (using written language in speech)! Slides take over! Too much text on slides (visually crowded slides) Voice control (volume and speed!) Not enough practise

MORE TECHNICALITIES Who? Groups of 5 students. What? Topics related to BE1 syllabus. When? After seminars, Tuesday 15.30, Friday 10.30, based on the schedule Where? In seminar rooms. How long? minutes. Why? Because you will learn /practise a useful business communication skill and you might be selected for the big competition! Grading? Individual grades, grade is included in the final grade.

BEFORE DELIVERING THE PRESENTATION IN CLASS 1)choose a topic (BE1 syllabus) 2)brainstorm & research sources (web, library) 3)select & organise ideas 4)structure your presentation (slides) 5)practise language & delivery 6)fill in presentation forms (RB, p. 60, 61) 7)discuss your ppt slides with teacher (office hours) 8) rehearse, rehearse, rehearse

ONCE AGAIN, AT LEAST A WEEK BEFORE YOU DELIVER THE PRESENTATION hand in the completed presentation form and draft slides (print them out, check spelling) PRACTISE AND REHEARSE!!!

PRACTISE → RB p LISTENING TASK 1 Listen to the introduction to a presentation and answer these questions: What will the main sections of the presentation be? Which signalling phrases can you hear?

LISTENING TASK 2 Listen to the speaker talking about tweens. Listening 1 What is her definition of tweens? Who is the audience? What is the purpose of the presentation? What is the presenter’s policy regarding questions, visual aids and handouts? Listening 2 Which signalling /signposting phrases does she use?

VIEWING TASK Watch the video and identify the mistakes the presenter makes.
