6 General Education program at The Citadel Orientation 101 Why is this important? The General Education program helps to develop the intellectual and cognitive skills and competencies you need to excel in a world in which knowledge changes, grows, or becomes obsolete on a daily basis. 1 You will be assessed through the E-Leadership Portfolio at various points during your college career to measure your progress on developing these skills and abilities. 1 Pascarella, E. & Terenzini, P. (1991). How College Affects Students. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Publishers. p. 114.
