Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary Rock  Rock that is formed from parts of other rocks that are compressed and cemented together or as dissolved minerals reform and build up in layers.

Classification  Clastic Rocks: Rocks that are formed from parts of other rocks.

Types of Clastic Rocks  Conglomerate: Made from cemented rounded rocks 2 mm or larger  Breccia: Made of angular cemented rocks 2 mm or larger Conglomerate Breccia

Clastics Continued  Sandstone: Made from cemented and compressed sand (less than 2mm to 1/16 th of a mm)  Siltstone: compressed silt ( to mm)  Shale: Made from compressed mud and clay Sandstone ShaleQ.H. Sandstone Cave Siltstone

Non-Clastic  Chemical: Rocks made from precipitation of minerals or evaporation of water.  Organic: Rocks made from biochemical processes

Chemical Rocks  Evaporates: Halite, Gypsum  Limestone: Precipitated Calcite from seawater (CaCO 3 )  Dolomite (Dolostone): Calcium Magnesium Carbonate (CaMgCO 3 ) Limestone Dolomite

Organic Rocks  Some Limestone: Coquina, Fossiliferous Limestone  Coal: Made from partially decayed plant material Coquina Fossiliferous Limestone Coal
