SEDIMENTARY ROCK

 Sedimentary rock is little pieces of our earth have been eroded--broken down and worn away by wind and water. These little bits of our earth are washed downstream where they settle to the bottom of the rivers, lakes, and oceans. Layer after layer of eroded earth is deposited on top of each. These layers are pressed down more and more through time, until the bottom layers slowly turn into rock.

 Are classified according to origin of the materials from which they are made (where they form).  There are three categories :  Clastic  Organic  Chemical

Clastic  Made from previously existing rocks  Classified according to the size and shape of the fragments in them.  Examples of Clastic rock are: Shale  Sandstone  Siltstone

Clastic  Examples of Clastic rock are:  Conglomerate or puddingstone  Breccia

Organic  come from organisms- they are formed either directly or indirectly from the material.  Examples of Organic Rock are:  Chalk Coquina

Organic  Examples of Organic Rock are:  Limestone made from shells Coal 

Chemical  formed when a sea or lake dries up, leaving large amounts of minerals that were dissolved in the water. Examples of Chemical rock are: Gypsum Rock Salt

Chemical  Examples of Chemical rock are: Limestone found in caves Dolomite
