A Different Kind of Adding Machine An abacus is a wooden frame containing a series of vertical rods It is used widely in China and Japan in businesses and homes Earliest known counting device was a board sprinkled with sand more than 5000 years ago Numbers are formed by moving beads up to the bar Some types of abacuses have been used in China since about the 12 th century They can serve as a calculator, an adding machine, or a cash register Chinese and Japanese learn how to use in school are trained by a professional abacus operator. Banks and other big businesses are finally giving away to electronic computers, however, smaller businesses will depend on the abacus
