1 Getting Connected to Science Creating an Online Student Activity

2 Workshop Goals  To gain a better understanding of how Filamentality can be used as an instructional and learning tool.  To learn how to create an online student activity (Internet Hunt) using Filamentality.  To gain the skills and confidence to train peers in creating a student activity.  To learn how Internet resources build the foundation to better activities.  To understand how Bloom’s taxonomy plays an important role in developing effective activities.

3 Tasks at Hand  Short term goal (today) Create an online student activity using Filamentality. Universe: Earth and Mars Learn how to use the training materials.  Long term goal Using online resources, create student projects WebQuest

4 Today’s Agenda  Creating a new hotlist.  Creating an online student activity.  Learning how to use the training materials.

5 K-3 Learning Continuum  As the result of Camp Connect professional development, the PDSCCs will Acquire technology skills and strategies to integrate technology into the daily curriculum; Learn how to integrate various online resources and tools into the 3 rd grade science curriculum; Understand how to create student science activities and projects; and Provide support and training to peers at their schools.

6 Training Options  Option 1: Use the tutorial (Slides 8-20) to introduce them to how to create the hotlist and the hunt. Then train them live while in Filamentality.  Option 2: Going live into Filamentality, use the activity sheet to guide them through the development process.

7 What is Filamentality?  Filamentality is a template-driven tool that guides you through the process of picking a topic, searching the Internet, gathering good Internet links, and turning them into online learning activities.  URL:

9 1.Go to Click, Start a New Topic. 3. Fill in the necessary fields. Creating a Hotlist: Steps 1-3

10 4. Scroll to the bottom and click, Spin this Thing! 5. Make any necessary changes. Creating a Hotlist: Steps 4-5

11 6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click, Add Links. 7. Fill in the following information for each link (URL or Web page) that you would like to include in your online activity. Creating a Hotlist: Steps 6-7 *Note: You can only add 3 links at a time. After completing the information for your first 3 links, scroll to the bottom and click, “Add Links” again. This will save your links and allow you to continue adding links.

12 8. When you are finished adding links, click, Edit Links. 9. Review your information and then click, Hotlist. 10. Add a title and introduction. Creating a Hotlist: Steps 8-10

13 Creating a Hotlist: Step Create categories to organize your links. You can have up to 5 categories.

14 Creating a Hotlist: Step Place your links into these categories by clicking on the appropriate number.

Add colors to the website. (optional) 14. Scroll to the bottom and click, “Hotlist.” A URL will appear on the top of the page. Your hotlist is now a published Web page! 15. Bookmark this URL to view your hotlist. 16. If you’d like to edit your hotlist at a later date, go to and click Return to an Existing Topic. Enter your name and password. 16 Step 1: Creating an Internet Hunt Step 1: Add a question or questions to each link. Think of Bloom’s taxonomy when constructing your questions

17 Step 2: Creating an Internet Hunt Step 2: Add a title to your hunt. Be very specific. Think of a title that will catch the student’s attention.

18 Step 3: Creating an Internet Hunt Step 3: Add an introduction to your hunt. Make. Think of a title that will catch the student’s attention.

19 Step 4: Creating an Internet Hunt Step 4: Add a big question to your hunt. Think of how your previous questions can help answer the big question. The big question should be on the high end of Bloom’s taxonomy.
