DEVELOPING YOUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY Miss Muller SHMD 119 Sport Didactics & Coaching Unit 1

Index of Chapter: 1.Why Philosophy? 2.Developing your Philosophy 3.Self Awareness 2

1. Why Philosophy?  Coaching is a challenging profession with many difficult decisions and ethical dilemmas  With a well developed philosophy, you will have direction and be ready for the pressures, you will be certain about the rules, style of play, discipline etc. 3

2. Developing your Philosophy  Philosophies are lifelong in their development  A philosophy consists of: Major objective (the things that you value) Your beliefs or principles that help you achieve your objectives  Your developing principles are tested when you are in a situation when your unsure of how to respond  Don’t expect to have all the answers immediately, philosophy is acquired by experience  Developing a philosophy involves two things:  Developing a self awareness  Know your objectives 4

3. Self Awareness Self awareness is important because your athletes will respond to how you behave. They are more likely to become what you are than what you want them to become Increase your self awareness by:  Reflecting on your own beliefs and assumptions  Requesting feedback from other people on how they see you 5

3. Self Awareness (continues) The three selves:  The ideal self: The person you would like to be  The public self: The image you believe other people have of you  The real self: The real you You should strive to keep your public self and your ideal self compatible with the real you 6

3. Self Awareness (continues) Self Esteem:  You should not base your self esteem on your winnings of losses  Positive self esteem is viewing yourself as competent and worthy person Self Disclosure:  Sharing with your athletes how you feel about what they say and do  Creates trust and care between athletes and coach 7

End of this Chapter 8 The most important ingredient of a philosophy is that you own it.
