TRIZ the theory of inventive problem solving DESIGNING A PERFECTLY ADVERSE SYSTEM through Liberating Structures

Why Use Liberating Structures Liberating Structures are departure from normal habits, traditions, and culture. They create space for innovation and are designed to include everyone’s voice. There are many liberating structures – today we will use one called TRIZ!

TRIZ (/ˈtriːz/; Russian: теория решения изобретательских задач or teoriya resheniya izobretatelskikh zadatch). a problem-solving and analysis tool developed by the Soviet inventor and science fiction author Genrich Altshuller and his colleagues in 1946

Lipmanowicz, McCandless4 PALETTE OF LIBERATING STRUCTURES Designer: Lesley Jacobs

Why do we use TRIZ? Speak the unspeakable Challenge the status quo & sacred cows Gives permission to discuss taboo subjects Builds trust

TRIZ – First Step Be creative! Make yourself laugh! This is SERIOUS FUN….. TASK: Reflect at your tables to make a list of “to do’s” in answer to:

How Can We Ensure our Critical Care Patients Experience PAD?

WORK at your tables to identify some great ways to make sure all ICU patients experience terrible issues with PAD. Write the list of ideas down on your flip-chart

TRIZ – Second Step Is there anything on this list that we currently practice, even remotely? Is there an element of truth in here? Now: Circle the ones that you are doing, even remotely Cross out the ones that you are not doing EVER.

TRIZ – Third Step Go through your list of identified truths: Separate into themes What actions could you take to address?

With the person next to you … Reflect on these questions: What have we learned today about our current practice? Where are we doing well? Where is the potential for improvement? What actions can we take….or what steps can we take to make a change/do things differently. Write these ideas on individual stickie notes – we will be using them in our next session!
