PHIL 199 Establishing Your Calendar

You Will Need-- One two pocket folder for each class you are taking Hard copies of all course syllabi A heavy magic marker A blank, unlined sheet of paper Calendar, with space for days and hours

Getting Started 1)Brainstorm all the things you need to do. 2)Beginning with the first class of the week, label your folder. 3)Review your syllabus. List all the things you need to do before Monday. 4)Repeat for all classes. Use extra paper if necessary.

Prioritize After you’ve established your list, number each item 1, 2, or 3. 1)Absolutely has to be done by Monday 2)Should be done by Monday 3)Doesn’t have to be done by Monday (For fun: try color coding instead of numbering!)

Estimate your Time Be realistic!

Estimate Your Time Consider the following formula: For every hour you spend in class, expect to spend 2- 3 hours outside of class.

Keep Track for 2 – 3 Weeks How many hours are you spending in each class? Too Few? Check with your professor. (You might not be doing as well as you think.) Too Many? Time to get a tutor!

Best / Worst What are your peak activity hours? When are your energy and concentration at their highest levels? When are they at their lowest?

Best / Worst Label each activity: ! Requires all your concentration and focus. Helps me to relax and feel good about myself ~ Could be done while watching TV or talking with friends.

Schedule It!!! 1)Fill in all of your fixed activities. 2)Fill in all of your appointments. 3)Fill in number one priorities at best times. 4)Fill in whichever number two activities you can realistically accommodate. 5)Save number three activities for week four, when we will set goals and break larger projects down into smaller chunks.
