History of Bullfighting It began over 300 years ago, in European countries such as England, France, Portugal, and Spain It is linked to ancient Roman history, when animal versus human fighting was considered a warm up for gladiators. The bull is a sacred animal to sacrifice, because he symbolizes strength and power. The first bullfights were on horseback and were to celebrate special occasions such as royal weddings and military victories. It was viewed as a sport and entertainment.

Famous Bullfighters Francisco Romero is considered one of the first bullfighters. He introduced using the muleta (cape) and the estoque (sword) to face the bull on foot. He lived from and fought bulls for over 30 years. His son Juan Romero and his grandson Pedro Romero were also famous bullfighters. Juan Belmonte is considered the most famous matador of all time. In 1919, he fought 109 corridas. He is known for turning the sport into a form of art. “Belmonte's passes were living works of art, emotional, dynamic.” Joselito & Juan Belmonte ~ 1920 Image retrieved from: 3/27/14

Female Bullfighters There have been several female bullfighters throughout history. Spain banned women from fighting on foot in the 1930’s. In 1974, Angela Hernandez went to court in Spain to overturn the ban on women. In Mexico and South America, the bullfighting world is more open to women. Maripaz Vega is currently the most prominent female matador. ¡Ella es el matador! Information retrieved from: 2/10/12.

The Bullfighting Ring Traditional bullfighting remains popular in Spain, where there are about 600 bullrings, from the 20,000-seat rings in Madrid and Barcelona to the many smaller rings in towns across the country

The Iberian Bull ~ El Toro Bravo The Iberian bull is used in bullfighting, because unlike other cattle, it will charge and fight instead of fleeing. When mature, it weighs 1,200 lbs. to 1,800 lbs. Bulls fought by matadors must be at least 4 years old. They are bred in large free range ranches.

Becoming a Bullfighter Takes years of training and afición or passion for the sport. Many times, young children have a role model who they want to grow up to be like. Parents are typical role models for children. A young boy may say he wants to grow up to be just like his dad. Being a bullfighter is considered a tradition in some Spanish families.
