Bodies of water in Puerto Rico

Words to remember Cardinal points – North, South, East, and West. Endemic – An animal or plant that only exist in a certain place Native – An animal or plant that belong to certain area Vapor – The gaseous state of water or other liquids Hydrography – science that studies the planets bodies of water. Hydroelectric system – use of force of water to drive generator and produce electricity.

Bodies of water Body of water - the part of the earth's surface covered with water (such as a river or lake or ocean) Examples of bodies of water in P.R Rivers, estuaries, lagoons, reservoirs, and hot springs. Did you know that three-fourths of the surface of the planet is covered with water? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNWuQD7QHBc Water plays and important role in processes that occur on earth. Water moves around the planet in a process known as the water cycle . Water cycle is a circular process because begins and ends in the same place.

Hydrography What is hydrography? Name examples of places its studies. Science that studies the planet’s bodies of water. Oceans, seas, rivers, lagoons. What are endemic species? Why is water conservation so important to them? Endemic species are species only found in P.R. We have to protect the water because they can not live anywhere else. Mention some uses given to water. Water is also used in Puerto Rico for many industries and is even use to produce electricity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFQ1IpkW81Y

Rivers of P.R 1. What is a river? River- is a continuous stream of water that flow into another body of water. 2. What are drainage basins? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-b1nM0RbOs An area of land where all precipitation that falls will flow downhill into a specific stream. This areas are lower than the land around them, which makes them look like bowl. 3. What are slopes? areas that slant downward into the 4 cardinal directions (South, North, West, East). Water runs down these areas as it runs towards the sea. These areas are called slopes. Example: southern slope flows into Caribbean Sea and northern slopes flows into Atlantic Ocean. 4. Longest rivers in Puerto Rico La Plata, Loiza and Añasco River.

Lagoons What are lagoons? Shallow bodies of water connected to the sea. How do they formed? When water fills up natural cavities found on land. Where do their water comes from? Usually from rain or underwater streams, may also come from rising sea levels.

Reservoirs What are reservoirs? Artificial lakes Why did people made reservoirs? in order to store water during the dry season. Where are they built? Why? Built in mountains in order collect water from rivers and turn it into drinking water. Many reservoirs are part of hydroelectric systems. What is a hydroelectric system? Use the force of water to drive generators and produce electricity. Name the most important reservoirs in P.R? Carite in Guayama, Carraizo in Caguas, La Plata, in Toa Baja. http://www.local10.com/news/drought- causes-major-headache-for-residents-of-puerto-rico/34926008

Estuaries What are estuaries? Locates on the coast have both fresh water from rivers and salt water from the sea. What can we find in estuaries? Swamps, mangrove, pelicans, floating plants Name 3 estuaries in P.R? Jobos, La parguera, Joyuda, Condado. http://places.eyetour.com/whatToSee/salinas/158/estuario-de-la-bahia-de-jobos In estuaries we can find mangrove forest. Mention the main trees in these forest. What is their characteristics? Red mangrove are the main trees. They can survive in areas covered with saltwater. Make swamps stronger. Protect the coast.
