Biographical Sketch He was born on August 18, 1934, in San Antón, Puerto Rico. He played 18 seasons of professional baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates as a right fielder. He was married to Vera Cristina Zabala and had 3 children. He did charity work in Puerto Rico and Latin America during the offseason. He was a 15 time all-star, won 2 world series, and retired #21 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He died on December 31, 1972 during an aviation accident while flying to Nicaragua to help earthquake victims. Roberto Clemente es de Carolina, Puerto Rico. Roberto Clemente es simpático.

National Baseball Hall of Fame Inducted in 1973 without the mandatory waiting period of 5 years. The only other player with this exception was Lou Gehrig. This change was voted by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. On March 30, 1973, the election took place. 92% of the votes said to induct Clemente early.
