CONTINENTAL SHELF EMBAYMENTS OF THE EASTERN MARGIN OF THE PHILIPPINES: LAMON BAY STRATIFICATION AND CIRCULATION The research objectives of the cruise is to quantity the spatial and temporal characteristics of the ocean processes governing the stratification & circulation within Lamon Bay and their relationship to marine productivity and ecosystems and to investigate possible linkage of Lamon Bay dynamics to the development of the Kuroshio. The observational program consists of integrated physical and biological oceanography measurements, obtained from ship-based underway oceanographic and meteorological sensors, including the hull mounted ADCP; and by water column stations (CTD-O2 with a 24-bottle 10-liter water sample rosette, figure 2 shows stations obtained in 2011). Net tows. The sea floor sediment was sampled with gravity cores. There are two ship based research phases linked together by an array of moorings recording ocean currents and T/S and by a land based high frequency radio array, as well as satellite coverage of SST, ocean color and altimetry, and larger scale ocean observations by global observational programs and by OKMC (Origin of the Kuroshio and Mindanao Current, a ONR program). Lamon Bay cruise #1, May/June 2011 Revelle cruise For Lamon Bay 2011 report, with US and Philippine components, go to: Lamon Bay Cruise #2 Legaspi, Philippines to Kaohsiung Taiwan, with Personnel exchange at Port Irene, Philippines.

drifters CTD/water samples moorings Revelle Underway: ADCP, SST, SSS, Chl-a, meteorology Station/track map of Lamon Bay 1. Red stars show drifter deployments [13 Surface Velocity Program (SVP) drifters were deployed in cooperation with L. Centurioni (SIO).]; red triangles are mooring deployment sites [6 in total]. There were 45 CTD stations most with water samples for chemistry; CTD/water sampling stations extended to 1500 m, or to the sea floor, if <1500 m. Moorings [TRBM]

The number of CTD stations in Lamon Bay cruise #2 would be similar to that of cruise #1, with the possible addition of CTD stations along the 18.5°N section; we envision ~ 50 CTD stations, most with water samples for chemistry; CTD/water sampling stations extended to 1500 m, or to the sea floor, if <1500 m. (Figure 2). These will be taken by the Scripps CTD/rosette system as done on cruise #1. 1 Ship-based underway oceanographic and meteorological sensors, including the hull mounted ADCP; 2 CTD-O2 with a 24-bottle 10-liter water sample rosette; 3 possible: sea floor sediment was sampled with gravity cores, ~6. 4 possible satellite Drifters deployment, ~15.

§ Personnel [~same as participated on Lamon Bay cruise #1 in 2011; I'll be more specific in early 2012 when personnel decisions are made]: Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory: 3 University of Hawaii: 4 Philippine researchers: 18 [all depart ship at Port Irene] Philippine Observers: 3 Scripps: 3? TOTAL: 28 observers - Allan Noveno (Philippine Navy) - Renito Paciente (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services or PAGASA) - Sonny Pajarilla (PAGASA) – CV to Follow
