WELCOME Interactive discussion on safety issues involving bus carriers trying to do their job….. SAFELY. Speakers: John Fabian, Chief Investigator NYSDOT and PTSB And Scott Weinstein, Superintendant MTA-NYCT Office of Safety and Training

SAFETY ISSUES Wheel separation accidents Collecting “Hard Facts” Reducing Bus / Pedestrian Conflicts

DISCLAIMER: NYSDOT does not endorse any product by any manufacturer. The topic presented here is in the name of safety and reduction of wheel separation incidents, bus collisions, and pedestrian accidents. The viewers are encouraged to review all available products and determine what is best for their individual situations.

WHEEL SEPARATION INCIDENTS

Problem: Roll Away Tires PTSB investigates several incidences of tire separation on a yearly bases. They have resulted in injuries and property damages. Single tire/wheel or dual wheel sets have tremendous energy due to weight and speed.

GOAL: ELIMINATE WHEEL DETACHMENTS PLAN: Provide Bus Operators and Maintenance Personnel with an easy, visible inspection of the lug nuts to: determine they are secure indentify brake or bearing issues

GOAL: ELIMINATE WHEEL DETACHMENTS

PROCESS: Install a plastic arrow on all wheel lugs that point in a circular direction and is heat sensitive. Movement of the arrow indicates a loose lug. Blistering of the arrow indicates substantial heat.

GOAL: ELIMINATE WHEEL DETACHMENTS RESULTS: Easily identifies loose lug nuts. Easily identifies “hot wheels”, caused by either bearing failure or brake drag.

Loose Wheel-Nut Indicator

Characteristics of the loose wheel indicators Comes in various lug nut sizes Comes in various colors with different temperature thresholds Easy to install Cost only a few dollars per wheel

250 Degrees 350 Degrees 425 Degrees

Goal: Learn from the facts Plan: Make use of technological advances to gather reliable facts to determine the true causes of incidents.

Goal: Learn from the facts Process: What is available today? - Electronic control module (ECM) - Video

Goal: Learn from the facts Process: What is an ECM ? How does it work ? What does it tell me? How can I use it ?

Goal: Learn from the facts Process: What is it? The ECM is an electronic control module that collects data from the bus that can be used to determine: -speed of the bus, rate of throttle, rate of braking, and timing of these events. VERY useful for accident investigations.

Goal: Learn from the facts Process: Where is it? It is located on the block of Detroit Diesel engines on transit and coach buses.
