Causes of WWII I.N.F.L.A.M.E.D “We will destroy you”

I. Isolationism “Don’t play in my sandbox and I won’t play in yours” Europe

Why? The United States military and economic power was strong enough to stop Hitler and Mussolini, but failure to do so fueled Hitler’s, Mussolini’s, and Japan’s conquests for power. Knowing that the U.S. would not stop all three continued to conquer other nations

N. Nationalism Feeling that your nation is superior to all others Aryans - Blond Haired. Blue – Eyed Germans will dominate the world NO Jews, Communists, Gypsies Homosexuals Allowed

Why? All three Axis power’s believed their country was superior to other’s and therefore had a right to conquer other nations. World domination became their goal Aryan German’s believed they were superior to others If Hitler had only persecuted German Jews, nations probably would have ignored him, but killing other nation’s Jews was a whole other story

F. F ascism

Fascism Extreme Nationalism* - nation is superior to all others Glorification of the State “It’s all about me” Totalitarian - Control of all aspects of Society Private Property Class System Racism

Why? Militaristic – glorified the army, built up their weapons, solve problems through war, influence of military in govt. Nationalistic – believed superior to other nations and had a right to conquer them Totalitarian – controlled all aspects of citizens lives limiting rights and requiring citizens to obey they leader The depression and use of propaganda allowed for strong leaders to take control who promised to solve the countries problems

L. League of Nations League Meeting “I wish I was texting” “Better turn Up my IPOD” “This is almost as exciting as My World History Class.” “I’m Bored”

League of Nations International body of representatives from each country with the goal of maintaining world –U.S. Did not join

“Let us return, however, to the League of Nations. To create an organization which is in a position to protect peace in this world of conflicting interests and egotistic wills is a frighteningly difficult task.” -- Hjalmar Branting, Swedish Prime Minister, Interpret this quote: What is Branting saying about the League of Nations?

Why? The league of nations was unwilling to take actions to stop aggression The U.S. didn’t join leaving the league weakened The Axis power’s knew the LON was not willing to go to war against them, so they just withdrew from the league and continued the aggressive actions.

A A. Appeasement : Appeasement - Allies give in to Hitler’s demands to keep peace France & G.B. Give Hitler “A cookie”… The Sudetenland Hitler

Munich Agreement Signed! France and Great Britain Give into Hitler’s Demands Germany Takes the Sudetenland

“And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health and martial vigor, we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time.” ― Winston Churchill, House of Commons, 1938 Interpret this quote…What is Winston Churchill saying about the Munich Pact

Why? France and Great Britain gave into Hitler to keep peace and avoid war. Hitler knew they were unwilling to go to war, so he had the advantage. Appeasement fueled his power for conquest knowing that no one would step in to stop him.
