Chapter 10.2

 Explain why control of the Mississippi Rover were important to the United States.  Describe how the United States purchased Louisiana  List the results of the exploration of Lewis and Clark and of Zebulon Pike.

 By 1800, 1 million people lived between Appalachians and Mississippi River. Spain controlled New Orleans  Pinckney Treaty: Spain agreed American ships/goods down the Mississippi and store them in New Orleans.  In 1800, Spain gave New Orleans back to France.  Jefferson alarmed by Napoleons desire to grow food in New Orleans/ship it to French islands in West Indies.  Haiti had a revolt led by Toussaint L’Ouverture, enslaved African, Napoleon sent troops to retake Haiti. Toussaint captured but Haitian’s declared independence.

 Jefferson wanted to buy New Orleans  Robert Livingston and James Monroe sent to buy New Orleans and West Florida for 10 million dollars.  France needed money, Talleyrand, Napoleon’s minister offered all of Louisiana and New Orleans.  Livingston agreed to pay 15 million for the land.  Jefferson worried whether it was constitutional…did the President have power to buy land…The Constitution allowed him to make treaties. In 1803, Senate approved it.

 Selected Meriwether Lewis to lead expedition.  William Clark selected to work with Lewis.  Jefferson ordered land to be mapped.  Learn also about Native American nations.  Find out if they wanted to trade.

 50 men selected, May 1804, went up the Missouri River from St. Louis.  Peace medals given to Native American tribes.  First Winter, stayed in Mandan, North Dakota.  Met Sacagawea, who led them over Rocky Mountains with her French-Canadian husband.  Crossing the Continental Divide, they eventually flowed on Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean.  Did not return until 1806 to St. Louis.

 From , Zebulon Pike explored the upper Mississippi River, the Arkansas River and parts of Colorado and New Mexico.  Pike entered into Spanish territory, arrested, and taken to Mexico. Maps and journals taken, but one hidden in barrel of gun.  His information provided knowledge about the America’s Southwest.  New Orleans would expand, and eventually become a state in 1812.
