Four Metaphors: Used to describe teaching Being a tour guide: A good tour guide takes there group to new places, helps them understand the history, helps the group appreciate and get excited. The tour guide has goals in mind and is flexible allowing the group to site see on their own. Being a sailor: Sailors have a route in mind, and a certain place as there destination but the plan doesn’t always go as planned. The sailor has to be able to be flexible and change the course, to find a new destination. Being a sculptor: Many sculptors answer when asked how they came up with their piece that they just uncovered what the material already had inside it. Teachers may come up with ideas with just from listening to their students. Climbing a hill: Teaching a group of students can sometimes feel like incline hill. Sometimes you have to stop, take a breathe and continue on. You can’t just stop all together and go back to the bottom.

Philosophy of teaching statement: A description of your ideas about teaching and learning and how those ideas will influence your practice. It should be based on your knowledge of educational research. Discuss approaches you would take to help students learn material. Include any goals you are working towards as an instructor. Mention how you feel about teaching and how important it is to you. Examples: What are elements of effective learning environments? What methods do you use in the classroom to achieve your teaching objectives?

Attributes of a Good Teacher Knowledge: A good solid understanding of the field of teaching and learning and your own content is very important. Students know when a teacher is talking about something they know verses something that they have no clue about. - Usually anyone that I have a conversation can know right off the bat if I have a sense of knowledge of what I am talking about Patient: A good teacher is not rushing his/her students, they give them time to think and act. They are not easily overwhelmed and is a good listener. Teachers will usually have to repeat instructions or there lesson a few times or remind students of classroom rules. Patience and stamina in a good teacher is very valuable. - More than ever I have learned over the years to have patience with people and especially with little children, to just take a step back and let them steer the way. Committed: A certain amount of being selfish is allowed when it comes to teaching. A good teacher is dedicated to there students and there future for learning. - Teaching is defiantly a job that you're either in it or you're not, nothing in-between and I can’t wait to be fully committed. Goodness of Fit- A term that refers to how good a match there may be between your qualities as a person and the demands of teaching.

National Education Association (NEA): What is it?- The National Education Association (NEA) is the nation’s largest organization of teachers and other education professionals. Principle I: Commitment to the student Principle II: Commitment to the Profession These two principles are a part of the NEA but have different Code of Ethics. Principle I states the educator strives to help each student realize his or her potential as a worthy and effective member of society, as for Principle II states the education profession is vested by the public with a trust and responsibility requiring the highest ideals of professional service.

School Climate vs. Culture School Climate: School climate refers way students experience the school…Example: The general social atmosphere in the school. School Culture: School culture is the way teachers and administrators interact and collaborate

Teaching Portfolios What is a teaching portfolio?: A teaching portfolio is a collection of documents and other artifacts that represent your personal philosophy and your research accomplishments. Why should students have there own?: They should create one because there portfolio can become a valuable resource for developing a students thinking. It is also can be an excellent tool if they choose to seek a teaching position.

Educational Autobiography What is an Educational Autobiography?: Your own education history told by you What do you think of when you think of school? Where did you attend school? When you walked in the building, did you have a sense of comfort? Fear? Anxiety? Close your eyes and imagine you are in school. What did you like about school? Do you remember what it smells like? Sounds like? Try and imagine specific teachers. What grades did they teach? Who were your friends in those grades

Racheal Moore’s Educational Autobiography: I remember starting school each year in my younger years, and no matter what every year had the same nervous feelings in the beginning. Am I going to be liked? Will I make friends this year? Is the teacher going to be nice? It was always hard to get started but one way or another you at least found one buddy to do everything with, if it was play time or work time. I remember my favorite teacher however, and that was my kindergarten teacher Mrs. Saunders. She made school not seem so bad and I was sad when that year was over. She had that one smell teachers have that you cant explain unless you smell it again as strange as that may sound. I may not know the specific reason I want to teach but Mrs. Saunders is defiantly a positive reason I want to.

Attributes of a Good Teacher Knowledgeable – a sound understanding of the fields of teaching and learning and your own content area is essential Alive- A good teacher has a healthy balance of warmth and strictness and an enthusiasm for being with young people, evidenced by his or her ability to share students interest Articulate- A good teacher has good communication skills and express herself or himself clearly. Innovative- constantly seeks new and exciting ways to interest and engage students in the topic at hand. Patient- is not easily overwhelmed or distressed and has the capacity to be a good listener. Committed- is dedicated and has a fostering love for learning Able to find joy in teaching- You cannot give your students joy in teaching if you do not love what you do! Reflecting: When in comes to teaching and the want for it I feel as the attributes that require you to learn yourself come with want of learning. While the joy, patience, commitment and aliveness for teaching should come naturally. If you feel as something is being forced maybe you are going down the wrong path. If you feel the want and desire to care and teach someone then you are headed in the right direction.

Martin’s three Criteria: Using these attributes, make an argument for or against the statement “Teaching qualifies as a profession.” Martin's Attributes of a profession A profession offers a unique, definite, and essential service A profession places an emphasis on intellectual techniques in performing its service A profession requires a long period of specialized training Teaching Qualifies as a Profession Yes teaching is a profession As a teacher you are providing a service that the next generation needs and each level has certain goals and standards to continue to the next When teaching you are trying to enhance students knowledge Teaching is a job you have to go to school for and understand how children learn so it takes time

Describe the NEA and the AFT: The NEA is the National Education Association - Nation's largest professional employee organization - Members are anyone who is in an educational setting from preschool to universities - Provides local services like workshops and collective bargaining for teachers - Also acts as a lobbying group on the state and national scale The AFT is the American Federation of Teachers - An international union - Affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations Includes teachers, school personnel, college faculty and staff, healthcare workers and public employees Explain the controversies and benefits associated with joining a teacher's union: Joining a Teacher's Union: Benefits - Can fight for better working conditions such as class sizes, pay scales, benefits, and workload expectations Controversies - Once going on strike, victimizing the students - Arguments that professionals don't have unions so there for teachers aren't professionals
