What Is an Animal Pathologist? Pathologists help determine the cause of death of animals. Their job often involves a lot of detective work, figuring out what is wrong with an animal, why it died, and what can be done to prevent others from dying. Veterinary pathologists make diagnoses and decisions that impact captive animals, wild animal populations and humans.

Duties of Animal Pathologists Take biopsies Conduct specialized medical testing Diagnose diseases Perform necropsies Perform research on the mechanisms of a disease Ensure safety of medicines, chemicals and materials by running animal tests Work closely with veterinarians to diagnose an illness so that the vet can recover the animal’s health

Becoming an Animal Pathologist Must have compassion and like to work with animals and people Need to be comfortable being exposed to surgical procedures Enjoy problem solving and detective work Much work is done alone, but must be a people person with good communication skills Be able to communicate findings to researchers and students

Education An advanced college degree will be required for this career. 4 years of undergraduate study to obtain a Bachelor’s degree (it may be possible to hold an assistant position in a pathology lab with a lower degree) Veterinary school will be required for anyone actually wanting to become an animal pathologist Most pathologists obtain a PhD or Master’s degree in addition to vet school

Employment The starting salary for an animal pathologist is $34,000 to $38,000 A certified animal pathologist with a doctoral degree has a starting salary of approximately $52,000 a year. Many pathologists are employed by the government, pharmaceutical companies or by universities. Pathologists conduct research and may have teaching responsibilities if involved in academia.
