CBR and DPOs from point of view of a DPO Context of Bangladesh Presented by: Jannatul Ferdous Pre-Congress Workshop Programme 17 Feb 2009, Bangkok.

Concept of CBR:  CBR is a strategy within general community development for i)the rehabilitation ii) equalization of opportunities and iii)social inclusion of all people with disabilities.

Who Are benefited from CBR?  People with disabilities themselves  Their families  Organizations and communities

Factors of CBR:  Health  Education  Vocational i.e. Economical Opportunities &  Social and other services ** The Empowerment of PWD. ** The Empowerment of PWD.

Major Objectives: A)To ensure that people with disabilities are able to maximize their physical and intellectual abilities: i. To access regular services and opportunities i. To access regular services and opportunities ii. To become active contributors to the communities and society at large. ii. To become active contributors to the communities and society at large. B) To activate communities to promote and protect the human rights of people with disabilities through changes within the community.

About DPOs: (Disabled Peoples Organizations) Types of DPOs: 2 major types of DPOs have become active participants: a)Cross Disability Organizations b)Single Disability Organizations ** The Single Disability Organizations make an important contribution at all levels by advising on the needs of people with specific needs. ** The Cross Disability Organizations are playing an important role in Disability Movement that is sensitizing people from grass-roots to policy makers’ level.

DPO Formation Process:  Formation of Self Help Groups (SHG)  Scaling up their leadership (through different trainings that make them aware about Human Rights)  Formation of Federations  Formation of DPOs.

SHGs and DPOs of PWDs in Bangladesh:  SHG and DPOs of PWDs are outcomes of some self-help initiatives.  Such initiatives comes from group solidarity which enables them to support their own through sharing of experience, exchange practical information, insight and knowledge.  Those solidarity and mutual support serve as the basis of a collective action towards changing the situation of PWDs.

Cont: As a Result: Social benefits, transportation facilities, employment opportunities are improving but of course these are too inadequate.

Education as a Factor of CBR as well as rights:  Early Intervention Program  Involvement of Community People  Inclusive Schools  Teacher Awareness Program.  Friendly Infrastructure and Curriculum as per the needs of Types of Children with Disability.
