“To Be” Verbs and Sentence Practice
Learning Objective I will check my prior knowledge of linking/ helping verbs, sentence parts, and types of sentences. I will then review “To Be” verbs and subjects/ predicates. (Criterion D Strands I, III)

Verbs Most important part of speech!! Action verb - describes what something does Linking Verb - connects a subject with a noun or adjective Helping Verb - helps the main verb and extends the meaning by conveying time

“To Be” Verb Song Sung to the tune of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” Am Is Are Was Were Be Being Been, Be Being Been, Am Is Are Was Were Be Being Been
Important! These are the most common linking and helping verbs. Linking - I am at school. Helping - I am going to school.
Practice Sage and Scribe Task - Use each of your “To be” verbs in a sentence.
Sage and Scribe 1. Partner 1 tells Partner 2 a sentence with a “To be” linking verb. 2. Partner 2 writes it down and checks to see if it is correct. 3. Partner 2 tells partner 1 that they are correct or that they need to fix the sentence. 4. Partner 2 then tells partner 1 a sentence and partner 1 writes it down (repeat directions).
