THE SEVEN CONTINENTS North America South America Europe Africa Asia Australia Antarctica

HEMISPHERES A Hemisphere is one half of the globe. There are four hemispheres: Northern, Southern, Eastern & Western.

LATITUDE A location north or south of the Equator, measured by imaginary lines numbered in degrees north (N) or south (S).

LONGITUDE A location east or west of the Prime Meridian, measured by imaginary lines numbered in degrees east or west.

MAP KEY/LEGEND A map key or legend explains the symbols used on a map.

COMPASS ROSE A device drawn on a map to show direction. The four cardinal directions : North, South, East & West. The four intermediate directions: Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest.

MAP SCALE A Map scale shows the relationship between distance on a map and actual distance on earth.

POLITICAL MAP Maps that generally show political, or human-made, divisions and boundaries of countries or regions.

PHYSICAL MAP Physical maps show the physical features of an area, such as the mountains and rivers.

CONTOUR MAPS A Contour map is a map that shows elevation using contour lines.

THREE LAYERS OF THE EARTH The three layers of the earth are: The Core (Inner/Outer) The Mantle The Crust

PENINSULA A piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides.

PLATEAU FLAT LANDFORM WHOSE SURFACE IS RAISED ABOVE THE SURROUNDING LAND, WITH A STEEP CLIFF ON ONE SIDE.

BASIN A broad flat lowland area surrounded by higher land.

LANDLOCKED COUNTRIES Countries that are almost or entirely surrounded by land having no coastline.

WHAT IS CULTURE? Culture is the way of life of a group of people who share similar beliefs and customs. When cultures spread their knowledge and skills from one area to another, it is a process known as Cultural Diffusion.

ELEMENTS OF CULTURE Government Language Religion Economy Also Important: Traditions, Customs/Values, Symbols.

RESOURCES Renewable Resource- resources that can be naturally replaced or grown quickly. Examples: Forests, Plant and Animal Life, soil and water (water cycle).

RESOURCES Nonrenewable Resources – resources that can not be replaced because they were formed over millions of years by geological forces in the earth. Examples: Earth metals, minerals and fossil fuels (coal, oil & natural gas).

TIPS & SUGGESTIONS Students should be able to identify the different types of maps and their purposes. Students should be able to identify and label the parts of a map. (Compass Rose, Map Scale, Key/Legend) Students should be able to write about the elements of culture related to their own culture.
