BELLWORK 1.How was Germany punished by the Treaty of Versailles? 2.What is totalitarianism? 3.Describe the U.S. economy immediately after WWI. 4.List three causes and three effects of the Great Depression. 5.What was the final outcome of the Russian Revolution? 6.THINKER: What is a democracy? (HINT: The U.S. government is a democracy!)

Let’s review the Russian Revolution……..

Rise of Dictators After WWI, Europe was politically unstable Some countries felt the Treaty of Versailles was unfair and wanted change! Also, a lot of countries were feeling the economic effects of the Great Depression. This created a desire for more radical governments. Communism Fascism Nazism

WORLD WAR II DICTATORS!

WWII Government Jigsaw First – on your slip of paper, write down your favorite pizza topping. Do NOT show anyone!!! During WWII, new governments rise to power throughout Europe. To learn about each type of government, you are going to participate in a jigsaw reading activity. The class will be split into groups of 3 & each person will have a different type of government from WWII Fascism, Nazism, and Communism As you read your ½ sheet of paper, fill in the corresponding column on your graphic organizer. When everyone is finished, share the information with your group and fill in the rest of the worksheet Be ready to discuss and participate!

WWII Government Jigsaw Now that you know about your type of government, we are going to do a simulation on their method of rule. The class will be divided into four groups – each group represents a different government/country from WWII In your group, pick a leader and a speaker As a country you are going to order a one-topping pizza. Your pizza may ONLY have one topping! The catch  You must reach this decision based on how your type of government makes decisions Be ready to tell the class about your discussion process!

WWII Government Presentations Pick two representatives from your country to speak to the class. While you present, address the following questions: 1.What are the beliefs of your government? 2.Who was the WWII leader of your type of government? 3.What pizza did you decide to order? 4.How did you come to this decision? 5.Were there any problems/arguments while reaching this decision? 6.Do you think everyone in your group supports this decision? Why or why not?

Rise of Dictators - Discussion This jigsaw reading also acted as a role play! Every group was representing a different type of government in WWII. Communism Fascism Nazism As a class, we will discuss each group and create a chart on the board about the characteristics. Fill in the worksheet as we discuss as a class.

Rise of Dictators To understand the characteristics of each government in WWII, you are going to do a Jigsaw Reading. Task: Read a section from the book and take notes to share with the rest of the class. Focus on the characteristics of your government I will pick a leader – they are in charge! They will read the explanation sheet and do exactly as it says. Be able to explain the characteristics of your government! If you have any questions….. Ask me, NOT your group.
