Introduction Resistance and Resilience to flooding River levels on the internet Extended Direct Warnings (opt out) New Flood Warning Codes

Flood Resistance and Resilience

Over 5.5 million properties in England and Wales are at risk of flooding from rivers, the sea or surface water. That’s one in six, which means there’s a high chance one of these properties is your home or business.

River levels on the internet

Background The Flood Warning Service Improvements Project is making numerous improvements to our flood warning and information service. As part of this project, we have launched river and sea levels on our website from 28 June 2010.

Why are publishing this information?

What information will be online? 1756 monitoring stations. Information will be updated daily. River and sea information will not replace flood warnings.

River level ‘thermometer’ Current water level. Information to help customers put this in context. There will be a written summary of the data underneath the graph.

River hydrograph

Contextual information Typical range – shows where river levels are for about 90% of the time. Flooding is possible - When one or more flood warnings are in force, a link to our live flood warning information will be displayed. Highest recorded – the highest river level recorded at that station. Recent highest – the highest river level recorded at the gauging station in the past 5 years.

How can people access this information? Through the flood section of our website. Three scales of maps: Environment Agency Region Environment Agency Area River Catchment

How are we promoting this service? Promoting the service on our website Articles in relevant publications. Produced a leaflet for the public which explains the service.

Extended Direct Warnings (Opt Out) Everyone who is at risk and has a landline telephone Including Ex Directory customers These customers can opt out if they wish. We would rather they received the full flood warning service.

Flood Warning Code Changes Done in consultation with partners and the public We are not in a position to go live with them yet but their be will be a huge launch when it happens

Community Engagement To engage with people at risk, partners, and organisations who may have a role in preparing for, responding to and/or recovering from flooding To help Improve flood awareness within communities People check and understand their flood risk People accept their flood risk and sign up to Floodline Warning Direct People understand actions they can take to prepare for flooding People take appropriate action in a flood
