Tides What causes the tides?

High Tides ● The gravitational pull of the Moon causes the tides. ● Water bulges on the side facing the Moon. ● The Earth is pulled towards the Moon leaving a bulge of water on the opposite side of the Earth.

Tides ● Areas that bulge are high tide. ● Other areas are experiencing low tide

The Tides ● Most places experience two high and two low tides each day ● Tides travel around the world in the same direction as the sun (east to west)

Tidal Range ● Tidal range is the difference in height between high tide and low tide. ● If the coast is steep the tidal range will be large.

The Sun ● The Sun also influences the tides, but to a lesser degree than the Moon.

Spring Tides ● Spring tides occur when the gravity of the Moon and the Sun combine to pull the Earth's waters. ● Highest high tides and lowest low tides.

Neap Tides ● Neap tide occurs when the Moon and the Sun are at right angles to each other. Each pulling in different directions. ● Lowest high tide and highest low tide.

Electricity ● Tides can be used to generate electricity. ● During high tide water is trapped by the dam. ● During low tide water rushes out, spinning turbines which create electricity.
