Warm-Up Activity Silently Work on the following Math Problems

Warm-Up Problems (-5) = = (-8) = (-10) =

Warm-Up Problems: Answers (-5) = 0 2.(-7) + 9 = (-8) = (-10) = -6

Any QUESTIONS? Share with your partner/group the methods you used to solve the warm-up problems.

Mini Quiz (-9) = = (-5) = 4. (-3) + (-8) = (-7) =

Daily Concept: Adding Integers using Addition Rules Standards: –(NS 2.3) Add positive and negative integers. –(NS 2.3) Add integers to solve problems arising in concrete situations. Objective: –To add positive and negative integers using a number line, absolute value, and addition rules. Brain Pop: – subtractingintegers/zoom.wemlhttp:// subtractingintegers/zoom.weml

Marco’s parents bought him a new video game for his birthday. The objective of this game is to find the hidden treasure before the pirates. For every treasure chest found Marco receives 10 points. If a pirate finds the treasure before Marco, he receives –15 points. This is what happened on Level #1: Marco found a chest, then the pirates found a chest, and finally Marco found 2 more chests. Write an addition problem to represent the events in this story. What was Marco’s score?

Marco found a chest: 10 + The pirates found a chest: 10 + (-15) + Marco finds two more chests: 10 + (-15) = Marco’s score is 15 points!

Academic Vocabulary Absolute Value: A number’s distance from zero on the number line. – What is the absolute value of (-6) ? –What is the absolute value of (4) ? Create your own number line.

Think-Pair-Share Each of you take turns explaining to your partner the idea of “Absolute Value”, and how you find it. »(25 seconds each) Also discuss how you might use absolute value when adding integers. »(25 seconds each)

Guided Practice Take notes in your journal: –Copy the steps –Copy the sample problems

Independent Practice Work on these problems silently and independently. If you are having difficulties use your journal as a resource (-3) = (-7) = (-8) + 9 = (-3) + 5 =

Mini Quiz 1.What is the absolute value of (-6)? 2.What is the absolute value of (8)? (-2) = (-4) = 5.A football team needs 15 yards to get a “first down”. On the first play they gain 7 yards. On the next play they lose 10 yards. On the third play they gain 9 yards. How many yards did they get all together? Did they get the first down?

Mini Quiz: Answers yards No

Group Activities: Rules Work QUIETLY and COOPERATIVELY. PLEASE do not interrupt the teacher during small group instruction. I will be monitoring all groups and providing feedback. PLEASE do your best and respect the others around you. If you finish early review your journal.

Group Activities Group “A” work with the teacher. Group “B” complete the activities in folder #1. Group “C” complete the activities in folder #2.

Lesson Close TPS the important information you’ve learned or practiced during today’s class. Sample problem. Any further questions, comments, or concerns? Tomorrow’s homework is: Page 180 (#42- #49)
