Workforce Development A National, Regional and Glasgow Context Stuart Reid 9 th December 2005

What is Workforce Development? Spot the difference?

What is Workforce Development? “The wrong guy, in the wrong place, at the wrong time..”

What is Workforce Development? “The right people, with the right skills, in the right place at the right time…”

Many Drivers = High Profile New Deal / EWTD MMC Pay modernisation: Agenda for Change, New Consultant Contract and New GP Contract Waiting Times New ways of working (Role Development) Workforce planning viewed as long term solution to these challenges.

High Profile = SE Expects! National, Regional and NHS Board plans Desire that these will predict numbers and be costed. Ideally “bottom-up” approach. Accuracy will improve over time.

Demand Supply Action Plan Tested for: Affordability Availability Adaptability Monitor Service Planning Current Workforce Workforce Demand Implications Workforce Demographics & Supply Issues The Future Workforce – Balancing Supply & Demand National, Regional & Local Actions for achieving Future workforce Recr & Retain Edu & De Service & Role Redesign Implement

Approach Can be used whether we are looking at a particular staff group or a service Guides the workforce plan with each chapter of the plan reflecting a stage of the process Reflects a bottom up approach? Need to pull together the outputs of the service/staff group work to feed the overall Board workforce plan Appendices or refer to more detailed plans

What already exists within Glasgow? Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Plan Various allied health professional plans Work underway within the MCNs Work being carried out as move towards ACADs Children’s Services Workforce Plan Waiting Times Submissions Benefits Realisation Papers Advanced Practice Strategic Review of Imaging Services Strategic review of Laboratories MMC Papers Consultant 600 information New Southern / Children’s Hospital

The Challenge? “The challenge is to consolidate the work already undertaken with a view to improvements in depth and accuracy of future plans.”

The challenge? “Yippee-ki-yay.”
