Landforms Mr. Rochford Sept , 2015

DO NOW – Sept. 24 Login to SOCRATIVE Room Name: DMSROCHFORD Please take the mini-quiz to see what we already know about Landforms When you are done please sit quietly await the teacher’s instruction.

LANDFORMS Landforms are the natural features of the earth’s surface.

Landforms How do landforms influence where people live and how we relate and interact with our environment?

Inside The Earth- Three Layers Core- the center of the earth. Divided into a solid inner core and an outer core of melted, liquid metal. Mantle- The mantle is around the core, it is a rock layer about 1,800 miles thick. Mantle rock is mostly solid, but in it are pockets of magma, that flows to the surface when a volcano erupts. Crust- The outer layer of the earth’s surface, 5 to 30 miles thick. The only layer that scientists have studied firsthand.

Layers of the Earth

The Seven Continents North America South America EuropeAfricaAsiaAustraliaAntarctica

Plate Tectonics A scientific theory that states that the crust is not an unbroken shell but consists of moving plates, or huge slabs of rock. These plates fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. For billions of years, continents have been moving away or toward each other in a process known as continental drift.

Plate Tectonics

Forces of Change Tectonic Activity and other forces inside the earth have caused changes in the earth’s surface, Faults- cracks in the earth’s crust. Earthquakes- violent jolts. Tsunamis- huge violent waves.

Types of Landforms

Exit Questions Login to SOCRATIVE ROOM – DMSROCHFORD Answer the Questions to see what we know!

DO NOW Monday 9/28 Using your macbooks: Find an example of the following : PeninsulaPlateauStraitIsthmus

PLATEAU FLAT LANDFORM WHOSE SURFACE IS RAISED ABOVE THE SURROUNDING LAND, WITH A STEEP CLIFF ON ONE SIDE.

PLATEAU

The Colorado Plateau

ISTHMUS A narrow piece of land that connects two larger pieces of land.

ISTHMUS

PENINSULA A piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides.

Peninsula

FLORIDA is a Peninsula

STRAIT A narrow body of water lying between two pieces of land.

STRAIT

BASIN A broad flat lowland area surrounded by higher land.

DO NOW – SEPT 29 Using your MacBooks: Go into your web browser and open the link: Join.quizizz.com Then sit quietly and wait for the teacher to provide you with the 5-digit code to enter the game.

LANDFORMS ACTIVITY Working with partners you will be assigned a landform. You will be provided a piece of paper, where you will define and illustrate that landform. You will also be asked to provide a location of your landform on the earth. Be specific. You may use your macbooks, Google Earth and other resources for this activity.

Current Events Due Every other Friday, unless otherwise announced by teacher. Outlines on website. Class discussion on proper article selection.

Current Events- ARTICLES ARTICLES SHOULD BE REGARDING CURRENT EVENTS ON THE GLOBAL, NATIONAL, STATE OR LOCAL LEVELS. WHICH ARTICLES ARE ACCEPTABLE? ASK YOURSELF: IS THIS APPROPRIATE? EDUCATIONAL?

CURRENT EVENTS Students will write a well written paragraph that answers the five W’s: Who is the article about? What is the main idea? What happened? When did the event take place? Where did the event or is the topic taking place? Why did this occur and how does it effect us?

GREAT RESOURCES Newspapers- New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Record, etc. Magazines- Time for Kids, Scholastic News Web Sources- TweenTribune.com, CNN.com YOU MUST CITE YOUR ARTICLE!
