Solve the following problems on a loose leaf piece of paper. 1.Mike’s Chinook takes off and climbs to 1356 feet above sea level. How many feet does the helicopter need to descend to reach the helipad at sea level? 2.Isaiah catches the football and runs the ball for a gain of 12 yards. On the next play the quarterback fumbles and they lose 5 yards. On the following play they lose an additional 9yards. How may yards does Isaiah have to run the ball to be back to where they ended on the first play? Write an equation and solve. 3.A deep sea diver goes down 25 feet below sea level. He then rises 16 feet toward the surface. How many more feet does the diver need to rise to reach the surface?

Today I will be able to use a number line to model the addition of integers.

What do the directions of the arrows indicate on a number line?

Equation:

3 + (-8)

Equation:

Write the title of the journal, the date and each question on a blank page of your math notebook. How can we use a number line to model and find the sum of -8 and 5? What does the absolute value tell you? How is it represented on a number line? Andy used his number line to find the sum of -7 and 3. He found that the sum was +5. Do you agree with Andy? Justify your answer by using a number line.

Find the sum of the integers represented in the diagram below. 1.Write an equation to express the sum. 2.What three integer cards are represented in this model? How do you know. 3.Can you make a connection between the sum of 6 and where the 3 rd arrow ends on the number line. 4.Would the sum change if we changed the order in which we add the numbers? For example: (-2) Would the Diagram change? If so how?

Jessica made the addition problem of the expression (-5) + (-2) +3 below. 1.Do the arrows correctly represent the numbers Jessica is using in the expression? 2.Jessica used the number line diagram above to conclude that the sum of the three numbers is 1. Is she correct? 3.If she is incorrect, find the sum and draw the correct model. 4.Write a real world situation that would represent the model and sum.
