  Romans wanted to start a government that did not rely on one ruler.  Citizens - people with rights and responsibilities ruled by a government  Roman Republic was led by two chief officials called consuls.  Republic - citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders.  The Roman Republic was made up of 300 wealthy men called patricians.  Use page 312 to define these terms: Patrician, Plebeian, Consul, Veto, Praetors, Tribune, Civic Duty and legislature Roman Republic Chapter 11, lesson 2

  The power of the consuls was limited. Consuls ruled for one year only.  Power was divided equally between the consuls. Both had to agree before the government could take any action.  If one consul said “Veto”, which means “I forbid it”, the matter would be dropped.  Early Rome did have dictators, but they only ruled for six months with permission from the government. How did the Republic Work?
